Description
On October 23rd., parliamentary elections took place in Argentina for the renovation of the national and provincial chambers. Such an occasion was appropriate to provide a service to the Salta's voting public and effectively test technical capabilities to develop a voting portal, capable of delivering election related content such as:
- Queries to Salta's district Elector Registry
- Election laws and authorities
- Legislature chamber composition and public seats to renew
- Political parties and candidates
- Elector conditions; requirements and obligations for voting authorities
- Up-to-date election results
This development presented the following challenges:
- Adequately structure massive volumes of data.
- Design a database capable of supporting the Elector Registry of the Province of Salta with 701,617 records of information.
- Achieve low average response times when querying the Elector Registry.
- Obtain a cell phone enabled website, supporting WAP.
- Reduce publication times for provisory results data.

With more than 24,000 visits, mainly from electors interested in knowing their vote place, We feel entitle to say that the project objectives where met.
The website became a reliable reference for the people of Salta, from electors to the media for several reasons. Before the voting, the website allowed people to check where they had to go in order to place their vote. This service provided this information by requesting the user to input his personal document number. When the election finished, updated information about the results became available. This data was uploaded on the fly to the website using a content management system.
The correct implementation of the database architecture supporting the Elector Registry enabled queries to perform rapidly, providing low response time to users. Other dynamic information was also stored on database.
The consistent UI design, compatible with W3C standards, allowed for a clearer content organization and display, and an improved website performance.
This was, proudly, the first WAP supporting website in the Province of Salta (http://mobile.dondevoto.org).
PHP, MySQL and JavaScript where the tools used for its development; XHTML/ WML, CSS y WCS where used for markup and presentation.
